Summary:

BIT will be performing a VLAN migration in order to dismantle our aggregation switches.

Details:

Our former access network consisted of several access switches, which were connected via a number of aggregation switches. One function of these switches was to perform the role of Spanning Tree root bridge. In the past year we have successfully migrated all customers and services to our new EVPN based access network. On this new access network it isn't necessary for us to perform the role of Spanning Tree root bridge, except for the shared colocation VLAN's. Despite all previous migrations there are still VLANs on the aggregation switches.

The last step of phasing out our former access network means we will migrate the last few VLAN's off the aggregation switches, and we will cease the root bridge for VLANs where this is not needed anymore. The role of root bridge will be handed over to other equipment for those networks that will require it. For almost all customers nothing will change as they're already fully migrated. Those few customers that will experience a change will be contacted directly and provided assistance in order to make this transition as smooth as possible. After the VLAN migration is completed the aggregation switches will be turned off.

The affected services will be interrupted for not more than a few minutes. No impact is expected on other services. During this maintenance, multiple BIT engineers will be present to execute this migration.
