Summary:

During the maintenance the webmail software will be upgraded to a newer version and the database will be migrated to a new database cluster. When upgrading the software and migrating the database, webmail will not available for a short period of time.
The shared Linux hosting platform with PHP version 5.5 will be upgraded to a newer platform with PHP 7.2. The back-end storage for all shared Linux hosting platforms will be migrated to a new filer. During the upgrade and migration, websites hosted on this platform might be unreachable for a short period of time. During the migration, up and downloading websites through the upload.bit.nl server will not be possible.

The shared database server db2.bit.nl will be migrated to a new server and MySQL will be upgraded from version 5.5 to 5.6. During the migration and upgrade, databases will be unreachable for a short period of time.
An internal database server will be migrated to a new server. This may cause the BIT website to be shortly unreachable. While migrating the database server, it will not be possible to update settings for e-mail accounts and bSMTP domains in the BIT portal. The database for UMTS, DSL en VPN accounts will be migrated to a new database cluster. During this migration, accounts might not be able to authenticate.

Details:

The webmail software will be upgraded to a newer version with the latest security patches. The database for the webmail software will be migrated to a database cluster to improve availability of the service. During this upgrade and migration, we expect webmail to be unavailable for a short period of time. It is also possible that login sessions during the maintenance will be disconnected several times.

The shared Linux hosting platform with PHP version 5.5 is at the end of its life-cycle. The servers in the platform will be replaced with ones having a newer operating system and PHP 7.2. The platform with PHP 7.0 will not be upgraded. Customers using the PHP 5.5 platform have been previously informed about this change with the possibility to test their sites on PHP 7.2 test platform. We will also migrate the back-end storage from a NFS filer to CephFS. With the migration to CephFS we will reduce the risk of failures and improve the performance. Because of this migration we expect all websites on the shared Linux platforms to be unavailable for a short period of time. Also it is not possible to up or download files through the upload server of the platform, upload.bit.nl, while migrating the data.

The shared database server db2.bit.nl will be migrated to a new server setup with latest security updates. MySQL will be upgraded from version 5.5 to 5.6. This server is also part of an active-standby setup to improve availability of the service. During the migration to the new server, databases will be unreachable for a short period of time.

We will also migrate an internal database server to a new server setup with the latest security updates. This server will also be part of an active-standby setup to improve availability. During the migration of this server it is not possible to update settings for e-mail accounts and bSMTP domains in the BIT portal. Last we will migrate a database for VPN, UMTS and DSL accounts to a database cluster to improve availability. During this migration it might not be possible to authenticate new login sessions for VPN, UMTS and DSL accounts.
