Network maintenance

25-05-2016 00:00:00 - 25-05-2016 06:00:00

On Wednesday May 25th between 0:00h and 6:00h BIT will perform perform network maintenance. During this maintenance we will make the following changes:

In response to the outage on March 7th and May 17th [1] a copper blade in the core switch in BIT-2A, which possibly played a part in the outage, will be replaced precautionary. Prior to replacing the switch blade we will divert traffic via other paths, so disruption of network connections is not expected. During the replacement, customers who have a vlan between BIT-2 and SARA or Telecity 2 will experience a disruption of a couple of minutes at least once, but possibly multiple times.

We will make a number of configuration changes to our core routers in BIT-1 and BIT-2A and to our routers in Frankfurt and London. The path between the core routers in BIT-1 and BIT-2A over the core switches will be replaced with a direct connection. Some route optimisations will also be implemented. We do not expect network disruptions as a result of these changes.

Additionally a blade in an access switch in BIT-2B will be replaced, which will increase capacity. Customers with a connection on this blade will be reconnected to another blade and are already informed individually. Disruption of other connections is not expected, but service is at risk for the duration of the maintenance window.

If you have questions or comments regarding this maintenance, please contact our Customer Care Department on +31 (0)318 648 688 or support@bit.nl.

Update placed at 25/05/2016, 1.27h
We have made the announced configuration changes which prevents a split brain situation as happened during the outage on May 17th from reoccuring. We have verified and tested the availability of multiple paths between the core routers.

Unfortunately, we were unable to take the direct link between the two core routers into service due to cabling and/or optical problems which could not be resolved directly. We will make this change in a new maintenance window, which we will be announced as normal.

The replacement of the core switch module has been done without problems. Unfortunately, we had forgotten to mention downtime of the Pinnen-over-IP service in the original announcement. This service is connected to the core switch and thus was offline for a number of minutes. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

At this moment we're moving a number of customer connections on a colocation switch in BIT-2B. We expect to finish this at approximately 2.00h. After that, we'll replace a blade in this switch.
