BIT Switches Emergency Generators to Greener Fuel

We’re now powering the emergency generators at our data centres with HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). This fossil-free fuel is made from renewable waste streams, like used cooking oil. Compared to traditional diesel, HVO100 cuts CO₂ emissions by 80-90%, and its cleaner combustion also means lower nitrogen and particulate matter emissions.

Until now, we’d been using GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) fuel, a synthetic diesel, but one still produced from natural gas. Moving to HVO100 therefore delivers extra climate benefits.

The immediate reason for the switch is a practical one. With everything going on geopolitically, we wanted to top up our fuel tanks, but GTL wasn’t available at the time. HVO100, however, was. So it felt like the right moment to take a fresh look at our fuel choice.

Technically, no modifications were needed: our diesel engines run on HVO100 without any issues, and it can simply be mixed with the existing GTL in the tanks. Our 24/7 fuel supply commitments remain unchanged.

And because HVO100 is a more sustainable option, we’ll be sticking with it even when GTL becomes available again.
