Corporate Social Responsibility

Since BIT's founding, we've sought ways to positively impact the world around us. Our industry intersects with crucial issues like privacy, energy consumption and cybercrime. We continually explore how to operate smarter, more sustainably and more securely. Additionally, we support various charities and participate in industry organisations pursuing responsible and secure internet practices, such as the Dutch Cloud Community and NBIP.

BIT's Corporate Social Responsibility

For us, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) isn’t just an objective, project or intention. It’s something we consider vitally important and work hard on daily. CSR extends beyond environmental considerations. We prioritise the human aspect, consider our future, and are committed to climate neutrality.

Environment

At BIT, we invest significantly in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Our data centres run entirely on green power generated from 100% Dutch wind and solar energy – producing zero CO2 emissions. We always consider power consumption when acquiring new equipment, both for ourselves and our customers.

Our smart cooling systems use outside air to maintain optimal data centre temperatures. Through contained cold aisle containment, we manage chilled air efficiently. But what happens to residual heat? We reuse it! Our adjacent conference centre BIT-MeetMe is heated by waste heat from BIT-2A, while BIT-2B and BIT-2C’s waste heat, in partnership with Warmtebedrijf Ede, warms local homes.

We champion electric vehicles by providing complimentary charging stations for customers – supporting both your needs and a cleaner future.

Ethical Business Practices

BIT preferentially sources Fairtrade-certified products, ensuring fair compensation and humane working conditions for farmers in developing countries. Our canteen prioritises organic produce, reflecting our commitment to sustainable production.

Privacy

We take profound responsibility for our services. Security, customer service excellence, and robust data protection are paramount. BIT respects all website visitors’ privacy, handling data meticulously and never sharing it with third parties. Our comprehensive privacy policy provides further details.

Transparency is fundamental to our values. We annually publish transparency reports disclosing:

  • Requests for customer data sharing
  • Notice-and-takedown requests (NTD)
  • Our handling of these requests

While we rigorously maintain system security, vulnerabilities may occasionally emerge. Our Responsible Disclosure policy welcomes findings to address such issues.

Working Conditions

We believe every employee deserves a safe, healthy workplace with development opportunities. Our HR policies emphasise nurturing personal strengths alongside competitive employment terms. We actively employ individuals with disabilities, ensuring excellent working conditions for all.

This approach fosters strong organisational loyalty, with minimal workplace dissatisfaction. Many BIT team members have served over a decade – a point of particular pride.

Community Engagement & Development

Education

We believe schools and businesses must collaborate to deliver quality vocational education. BIT regularly mentors students, shares our technical passion through guest lectures, and offers data centre tours – giving students and educators exclusive behind-the-scenes access.

Development

With IPv4 address shortages looming, we actively participate in the Dutch IPv6 Taskforce to drive adoption. IPv6 is standard in our service offerings – new customers automatically receive IPv6 address ranges alongside IPv4 addresses.

BIT maintains close involvement with hacker communities through events like OHM2013, SHA2017, MCH2022 and spaces like NURDspace.

Support

BIT proudly supports several initiatives through complimentary IPv6 connectivity, including:

  • Two root nameservers (ISC’s f.root-servers.net and RIPE NCC’s k.root-servers.net)
  • Ubuntu Linux’s official release server (releases.ubuntu.com) and Dutch mirror (nl.archive.ubuntu.com)
  • IPv6 addresses and connectivity for AMS-IX
  • Sponsorship of RIPE NCC with IPv6 connectivity

Code of Conduct for Abuse Mitigation

The Dutch cloud and hosting sector established this code for digital infrastructure operators through the Internet Safety Platform, collaborating with government and organisational stakeholders. The code aims to contribute to a safer internet by protecting networks against cybercrime, abuse and exploitable vulnerabilities. BIT played a key role in developing this code and fully endorses it.

Dutch Cloud Community

This industry association unites Dutch hosting, cloud, VOIP and managed service providers. The community brings together companies of all sizes to form a cohesive, entrepreneurial network. Our commitment to high safety and ethical standards led us to adopt the Dutch Cloud Community’s Code of Conduct.

NBIP

BIT has participated in the National Internet Providers Management Organisation since its 2002 founding. The NBIP assists ISPs with lawful interception implementation and DDoS protection – an increasingly critical issue for digital infrastructure. We’re actively involved in initiatives like NaWas to combat these threats.
