Fiber maintenance

21-04-2017 00:00:00 - 21-04-2017 09:00:00

On Friday, April 21st between 0.00h and 9.00h our suppliers will perform maintenance on two of BIT's fibers. These two fibers are part of BIT's core network, which connects datacenters Equinix AMS7 (former Telecity 2) with BIT-1 and SARA with BIT-2.

BIT operates two non-overlapping fibers from two distinct fiber providers. On April 21st infrastructural maintenance will take place on two different locations, causing our providers to move these fibers. This will result in a disruption of the connections. Attempts to reschedule one of these maintenance windows unfortunately have failed, so we have to consider the likelihood that both these fibers will be disconnected at the same time. We have been promised by our providers that they will give restoration of our fiber priority to shorten the duration of the outage.

As long as only one of the two fibers is disconnected, only customers operating their own wavelength over BIT's fibers and customers operating their own AMS-IX connection will be affected. Other traffic will be rerouted via other connections.

If both fibers are disconnected at the same time, the following services will be affected:

  • Wavelengths operated by customers over BIT's fibers
  • AMS-IX connections operated by customers
  • customer VLANs between Amsterdam (SARA and Equinix AMS7) and Ede (BIT-1 and BIT-2)
  • Mobile internet traffic (UMTS and 3G/4G) on BIT's APN
  • ADSL/SDSL/VDSL, WEAS and extended ethernet services
  • customer VLANs between BIT and Solcon

Unfortunately we are unable to receive a more detailed planning from our fiber providers, so we cannot give an indication of the duration of this situation.

Internet traffic to and from BIT's network in BIT-1 and BIT-2 datacenters will be rerouted via our connections to Frankfurt and London. This may cause a short disruption at the moment traffic is rerouted.
